1.National Highways and state highways.
National Highways connects various regions of one state to the other like capital of one state to the other  state capital while  State highways are those that connects various regions within state means main cities of a state.

2. Broad Gauge and Meter gauge.
Ans: Broad Gauge have distance between the inner sides of two tracks 1.676meters  while Meter gauge Meter Gauge  have distance between the inner sides of two tracks 1meter.

3.Inland Waterways and Oceanic Waterways
Ans: Inland Waterways is used to transport goods from one place to another inside a mass of land while Oceanic waterways goods are usually transferred from one land mass to another via the oceans and the seas.

(a)What are National Highways? Give the name of two such highways.
Ans: National Highways are road which facilitates inter-state transport , movement of defence materials to strategic areas and also connects manufacturing centers.
Two such Highways are: NH-1(Delhi-Amritsar ) NH-2 (Delhi-Kolkata)

(b) What is the Golden Quadrilateral Project?
Ans:  The Golden Quadrilateral Project is the largest express Highway project connecting four major cities-Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

(c) Give three economic benefits of the Golden Quadrilateral Project.
Ans: Three economic benefits of the Golden Quadrilateral Project are:
(i) The Highways interconnects many major cities and ports.
(ii) It provides  an impetus to truck transport throughout India.
(iii) It enables the industries growth of all small towns through which it passes.

(d) Explain the role of roads in the economic development of the country .
Ans: Roads helps in the better utilization of the resources of the backward areas by linking them with the most advance areas it also helps  in the process of industrialization  and urbanization.

2.With references to Railways, answer the following questions:
(a) Explain how the Indian rail network is one of the largest and busiest networks in the world.
Ans: The Indian rails carry thousands of people at a fixed time and thus it shows that Indian rails have largest networks and busiest network.

(b) What is the significance of an efficient transport system?
Ans: The significance of an efficient transport system are:
(i) It should be comfortable.
(ii) It should be safe for travelling.
(iii) It should have very good speed.

(c) Describe the three categories of track system followed in India.
Ans : The three categories of track system followed in India are as follows:
(1) Broad gauge-most widely used (Distance between the two lines from which the train pass should be 1.676 meters)
(2) Metre gauge- Distance between the two lines from which the train pass should be 1 meter.
(3) Narrow gauge- Distance between the two lines from which the train pass should be 0.762 meter to 0.610 meter.

(d) Railways binds the economic and cultural life of the country. Justify this statement giving examples.
Ans:  It helps to enhance and strengthen the feeling of unity and brotherhood among people by linking them in contact with one another justifies that railways binds the economic and cultural life of the country.

3.In the context of air transport ,answer the following questions:
(a) when and where did the air transport begin in India?
Ans: The first air transport  was established between Allahabad and Naini in 1911.

(b) Discuss the contribution of Air India in the air transport of India.
Ans: Air India has become the 16th largest airline in Asia, serving 50 domestic destinations and 39 international routes and serving over 100 cities.

(c) List the advantages of air transport in a vast country like India.
Ans: The advantages of air transport in a vast country like India are:
1. It is the fastest and comfortable mode of transport.
 2. It is indispensable when we compare speed and ease with which aeroplane can cross mountain barriers.
3. It is of particular importance during natural calamites It is used to air lift people from affected areas and to air-drop foods, medicines and other necessary things to calamity affected people.

(d) Give two advantage  and one disadvantage of helicopter services over aeroplane services.
Ans: Two advantage of  helicopter services over aeroplane services are:
1. This are small and can easily be used in rescue of people.
2. It is uses less fule.
One disadvantage of  helicopter services over aeroplane services is that it cannot carry large number of passengers.

4.With reference to the waterways ,answer the following questions:
(a) Explain why India has an extensive network of waterways.
Ans: It is because India is partially oceans locked country that is why India has an extensive network of waterways.

(b) Explain the role of oceanic waterways in the transport sector of India’s economy.
 Ans: The role of oceanic waterways in the transport sector of India’s economy are:
1. The Oceans donot have any barriers.
2.The means of transportation is cheaper.

(c) Give two advantage and one disadvantage of water transport.
Ans: Two advantage of water transport are:
1.   Cheapest means of Transportation.
2.   Suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods thereby promoting International Trade.
One disadvantage of water transport is that it need long hours to travel 

(d) Give geographical reasons:

(i) The Ganga is navigable from its mouth right upto Allahabad.
Ans: As it is joined by a number of tributaries it maintains a depth of more than 10 m upto Allahabad.

(ii) The Peninsular rivers are not navigable.
Ans: As slopes of Ganga is not gradually free from stones and rocks.

(iii) Mumbai is a harbor and a port.
Ans: As Mumbai has a natural Harbour and is also a Port as it has the facilities of loading and unloading.
