                  TOPOGRAPHY

Ø  What is a map?

Ans: It is a flat representation of a portion of the earth or the whole earth being reduced to scale.

                           MAP

Ø  Large scale:-The map which which represent the smaller portion of the earth in represents with maximum details.

Ø  Small scale:- Larger portion represented with fewer details.

Ø  Physical map:- It shows relief, drainage, climate, soil, natural vegetation.

Ø  Cultural map:-It shows political boundaries, land use, crops, language, literacy rates.

 

        What is GEODETIC survey?

Ans: It refers to survey over a very large region/area.

There are 5 basic elements of Topography map they are as follows:

1. Topic( or Index No.):- Example: 45D/7 or 45D/10

2. Scale :-Example 1:50000

3. Gride:- Examples: Lines of eastings and northings.

4. Directions: North, South, East, west, North east, South east, South west       

                        North east and North west.

5. Legend(or Keys): Example :  (A red square means a permanent hut)

Now explaining these 5 basic element of topography in detail:

1.Index number: We say take out the map of 45D/10 or 45D/5 do you know from where does these number and alphabet come from?  It is mentioned in the video do try to check them out!!!! 

 

2.Scale : It is the ratio of distance between two points on the map and the distance between same two points on the ground .

                                   OR

It is a ratio of Map distance and ground distance.

  

Types of scale

(i)Verbal scale :-That is it is represented in statement for Example:2cm=1Km

(ii).Representative fraction (R.F) :- That is it is represented in fraction form

                                                       Example: 1:50000

(iii). Graphical scale or Linear scale: It is represented in form of graphics

3.Directions

North, West , East, South, South east, South west, North east. North west.

[North is the main direction]

4. Grid : There aer two types of grid. They are as follows:

(i) Easting:- A set of vertical and parallel line drawn along the X-axis 2 cm apart on the map propagating towards east . These lines are numbered from 00 to 99.

(ii) Northing: A set of horizontal parallel line drawn along the y- axis 2 cm apart on the map propagating toward North. The line are numbered from 00 to 99.

5. Legend:-  Legends means the key word which is mostly provided in the topographical  map at the bottom.
